Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains, the coastal city of Lima is often overlooked. But the capital of Peru is a wonderful place to visit, With great food, ancient ruins, sunny weather, and friendly locals. Check out these fun facts about Lima that will make you book a plane ticket asap! 

  1. Lima used to be called La Ciudad de los Reyes which translates to “The City of Kings”.
  2. After Cairo in Egypt, Lima is the second largest city in a desert. At 2,672 sq. km (1,031 sq. mi) it is home to a population of over 9 million.
  3. If you’re in Lima for New Year’s Eve, remember to wear yellow as that’s considered the color of good luck here.
  4. The tiny yellow taxis that you see in Lima were actually not meant for the road. They were originally manufactured so that workers could drive them around inside large factories in Japan.
  5. Soccer or fútbol is incredibly popular in Lima, and the two top teams here are Alianza Lima and Universitario de Deportes.
  6. Quinoa may have achieved superfood status worldwide but it is originally from Lima. Don’t forget to try a local hot drink called quinoa emoliente that’s super delicious!
  7. Inca Kola is a bubblegum-flavored soda that is way more popular than Coca-Cola in Lima.
  8. One of the most popular and well-loved spots in the city used to be a cat park called “Parque Kennedy”. However, in 2017, all the cats were taken to a shelter, so while the park no longer has a pack of felines, you can still go and enjoy the scene.
  9. If you are at a party with locals, don’t be surprised if you see everyone drinking beer from the same glass. One person will usually pour a little beer into a glass, drink it up, and pass on the bottle and glass to the next person who repeats the process, and so on and so forth. 
  10. Craving ceviche? You will have to get it during the first half of the day. Locals are obsessed with the quality and freshness of their fish and won’t serve or eat ceviche for dinner.
  11. The dogs in Lima are certainly the most fashionable you will ever come across as their humans LOVE dressing them up all year round!
  12. Many people swear by the health benefits of Lima’s frog smoothies. It’s exactly what it sounds like – frogs blended into a juice. Needless to say, it’s not for the faint-hearted!
